Code of Conduct — Individual Members

Standards of professional behaviour expected of all individual members of the Institute of Administrative Management.

1. Introduction

The IAM Code of Conduct sets out the standards of behaviour expected of all individual members. By joining the IAM, members agree to abide by this Code and to uphold the reputation of the Institute and the administrative management profession.

This Code applies to all membership grades, from Student Members to Fellows. Adherence to these principles demonstrates your commitment to professionalism and helps maintain public trust in our profession.

2. Core Principles

Integrity

Act with honesty and integrity in all professional dealings. Be truthful and transparent, avoid conflicts of interest, and never engage in deceptive or misleading practices.

Professionalism

Maintain the highest standards of professional competence. Perform duties diligently, take responsibility for your work, and strive for excellence in all professional activities.

Confidentiality

Respect and protect confidential information. Only use or disclose confidential information with proper authorisation and in accordance with legal requirements.

Respect

Treat all individuals with dignity, fairness, and respect. Promote equality and diversity, and do not discriminate on any grounds including race, gender, age, or disability.

Accountability

Take responsibility for your actions and decisions. Accept accountability for the consequences of your professional conduct and be prepared to explain your actions.

Continuous Development

Commit to ongoing professional development. Maintain and enhance your knowledge, skills, and competencies to ensure continued professional effectiveness.

3. Standards of Professional Conduct

1. Professional Competence

Members shall:

  • Only undertake work that they are competent to perform
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills relevant to their role
  • Seek guidance or refer to others when matters are beyond their competence
  • Complete required Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities
  • Keep accurate records of their professional development
  • Apply their knowledge and skills in the best interests of their employer or clients

2. Integrity and Honesty

Members shall:

  • Be truthful and accurate in all professional communications
  • Not knowingly make false or misleading statements
  • Disclose any actual or potential conflicts of interest
  • Not use their position for personal gain at the expense of others
  • Not accept gifts or hospitality that could influence their professional judgement
  • Report any unethical behaviour or breaches of this Code

3. Confidentiality and Data Protection

Members shall:

  • Protect confidential information obtained through professional relationships
  • Not disclose confidential information without proper authorisation
  • Comply with all applicable data protection laws and regulations
  • Use personal data only for legitimate purposes
  • Ensure appropriate security measures are in place for sensitive information
  • Maintain confidentiality obligations even after leaving a role

4. Professional Relationships

Members shall:

  • Treat colleagues, clients, and the public with respect and courtesy
  • Not engage in harassment, bullying, or discrimination
  • Promote a positive and inclusive working environment
  • Collaborate effectively with others and share knowledge appropriately
  • Acknowledge the contributions of others
  • Provide constructive feedback in a respectful manner

5. Representation of Qualifications

Members shall:

  • Accurately represent their qualifications, experience, and competence
  • Only use IAM designatory letters while membership is current and in good standing
  • Not misrepresent their membership grade or status
  • Ensure CVs and professional profiles are accurate and up to date
  • Not claim qualifications or achievements they have not earned
  • Correct any inaccuracies in how they are represented by others

6. Legal and Regulatory Compliance

Members shall:

  • Comply with all applicable laws and regulations
  • Follow organisational policies and procedures
  • Not engage in or condone illegal or unethical activities
  • Report suspected illegal activities through appropriate channels
  • Cooperate with regulatory authorities and investigations
  • Maintain awareness of relevant legal and regulatory requirements

7. Obligations to the IAM

Members shall:

  • Uphold and promote the reputation of the IAM
  • Not bring the Institute into disrepute through their actions
  • Comply with IAM rules, regulations, and decisions
  • Cooperate with IAM investigations and disciplinary procedures
  • Pay membership fees and other charges promptly
  • Keep the IAM informed of changes to contact details and professional status

4. Enforcement & Disciplinary Procedures

The IAM takes breaches of this Code seriously. Members who fail to comply with these standards may be subject to disciplinary action.

Reporting Concerns

If you become aware of a potential breach of this Code, you should report it to the IAM. Reports can be made confidentially and will be handled in accordance with our Complaints and Disciplinary Procedure.

Disciplinary Process

Allegations of misconduct are investigated thoroughly and fairly. Members subject to investigation have the right to respond to allegations and to appeal decisions. The disciplinary process may result in:

  • No further action
  • Written warning
  • Requirement for additional training or CPD
  • Suspension of membership
  • Expulsion from the Institute

5. Commitment Declaration

By maintaining membership of the Institute of Administrative Management, I commit to:

  • Uphold the Core Principles and Standards set out in this Code of Conduct
  • Act with integrity, professionalism, and respect in all my professional activities
  • Maintain and develop my professional competence through continuous learning
  • Protect the reputation of the IAM and the administrative management profession
  • Comply with IAM rules and cooperate with any investigations
